Fierce Frugal Fabulous: Marc by Marc Jacobs Black Wedge

HI Beautiful People!

Yesterday I found myself in the Sunset District of San Francisco and of course I had to visit my fav thrift store Crossroads Trading between 8th and 9th on Irving.

Earlier last week I was there and scoped out a pair of black wedge heels from Marc by Marc Jacobs. Now I have never owned a scrap of fabric sold by anyone with a name even closely resembling Marc Jacobs. So it was fun just for me to try on a pair of shoes that have that name on it. I liked them but I was not entirely convinced that I would wear them so I didn’t buy them.

Yesterday when I arrived I made a beeline for where I found the shoes and was happily surprised to see that no one had snapped them up yet. So I tried them on again and immediately was won over. I thought I could pay $35 for this pair of heels. So, I did! and now they are mine, all  mine!

I hear you calling me a brand whore but I don’t care

Yes, only $35

The shoes are fairly comfortable because when you consider the platform the heel is only 2-3 inches.  Hopefully I wont fall in them. The size is perfect…37 1/2. I didn’t even know Europeans sold half sizes. They are also in like new condition. :-)

Can you tell I am excited about my new shoes?

Back to Basics: Bobby Pins

Hi Beautiful People!

I have been pinning my hair up in a chignon lately. I will admit I am going hard for the curatorial look to match my new job! I noticed that the regular run of the mill bobby pins from discount department stores just not do not cut it for my ultra fine hair. Most bobby pins by brands like Conair or Goody are too large and end up slipping out of my hair. Even the mini bobby pins produced by Goody did not stay in my hair very well.

So when I stumbled upon a kiosk of premium bobby pins I knew I had to branch out and try something new. I grabbed a set of 36 bronze Premium Bob Pins ($2.99) by MetaGrip available at Sally Beauty Supply. I have been using these exclusively since I bought them and let tell you I cannot go back to the cheap brand of bobby pins. The premium bob pins by MetaGrip available Sally Beauty stay put all day long and at the end of the day my bun remains just where I put it in the morning! I bought the bronze tone, but they are also available in black, gold, and white.

Winter Watch: Adorable Leather Gloves

HI Beautiful People!

A little bird told me that Target has a large selection of really cute leather gloves for less than $25. I went to see for myself and wow was I impressed. If you want or like gloves, then you should also go see for yourself. I dare you to buy only one pair!

As you can see in the first picture there is a great selection of colorful gloves. I didn’t buy a pair yet but I plan on getting some ASAP before all the cute ones sell out.

I love that the gloves come in two sizes as well (S\M or L\XL).

Did I mention this would be a great christmas gift?

Timex Weekender Watch

Hi Beautiful People!

Recently I bought myself a new watch watch. Now, I needed a functional watch because I am obsessed with time lately. BUT I also wanted something fabulous and, of course, budget friendly. Now, finding a watch that is attractive but also functional AND inexpensive is no easy task!

I came across a Real Simple magazine article about watches during my journey. The article featured the Timex Weekender with red woven strap and I was instantly attracted to this watch. The elegance is in the simplicity of this watch. I love the bright red color and the strap detail is really interesting and cute. It somehow looks very old fashioned with a modern update. I know it is funny to wax poetically about a watch but I really really like it.

Timex Weekender with Red Woven Strap ($27.95)

The watch retails for $44.95, but I bought mine on Amazon for $27.95 and got free shipping. Speaking of Amazon, the time of no tax shopping is gone. Sadly I was charged taxes on this purchase for the first time.

Didn’t someone once say “change is the only constant.”

15% off Entire Purchase at Sephora (ends April 5)

Hello Beautiful People!

Exciting things are happening at your local Sephora store!  If you don’t already know, Sephora is a veritable Mecca of designer beauty products and fragrances. I only discovered Sephora in about 2007 when a co-worker provided me with a recommendation for DiorShow Mascara (Loved it, BTW). I became a life-long Sephora shopper about four minutes after I entered the store for the first time. Sephora is where beauty product mavens like myself go to heaven. So, if you haven’t already been, your homework is to head on out to your nearest Sephora to browse. Mini Sephora stores are now located in selected JCPenny stores for your shopping convenience.

The super exciting news is those of us who hold a Sephora Beauty Insider card can enjoy 15% off our entire purchase (in stores and online) in honor of Chic Week (ends April 5). I absolutely love this sale because lets face it…the vast majority of high-end designer products and fragrances NEVER GO ON SALE. If you don’t have a Beauty Insider card, I recommend that you sign up immediately if only for this once a year sale.

I have had my eye on a new set of parfumes for several months. I prefer mini bottles of fragrance because the scent in parfume goes stale after it sits on your dresser for a long time. I like to buy the small ones and use them up so the scent never turns stale. So yesterday I headed out to my local Sephora and purchased the Tocca Eau de Parfume Viaggio set of three fragrances!

Tocca Viaggio Eau de Parfume set ($45 original price)

It is really a huge splurge for me right now but I justified it by reminding myself that the sale only takes place once a year. Ok, I do feel guilty but I asked hubby and he encouraged me to buy it. :-)

While I was browsing around in the store I found an absolutely DIVINE hand cream. I was also able to justify purchasing this because it had a limited edition fragrance label (I always fall for this marketing ploy!)….and I am trying AGAIN to stop biting my nails once and for all. Nail biting has been a lifelong struggle for me.

L’occitane is famous for their 20% shea butter hand cream and the reputation is well earned. I sampled the Desert Rose fragrance early on in my visit and then went back to find a tube to purchase. When I couldn’t find the desert rose scent in the display, I took the liberty of opening the stock drawer below and pawing through the bin of lotions until I found what might have been the last one in the Desert Rose scent. The feel of this hand cream is fabulous and the scent is just so pretty. I couldn’t help myself. (apologize for the xtra small image…couldn’t find a larger one!)

Another great thing about Sephora is extravagant SAMPLES. I cashed in some Beauty Insider points and received two samples: an Ojon deep conditioner and a fancy Shaving Cream for hubby. The cashier also slipped me a Givenchy and a Emilio Puccini fragrance sample.I went into the store for the perfumes and only fell prey to one additional impulse buy! Yay!

First Images from Jason Wu for Target Lookbook

Hi Fashion Lovers!

Happy New Year! I hope that 2012 is beautiful for all the lovely ladies out there in fashiondom.

I am here today to pull you out of the post-holiday winter doldrums by introducing images of some lovely dresses and a handbag from the upcoming Jason Wu for Target collab. Mr. Wu became infamous when our lovely FLOTUS chose him to design her inaugural gown. Now, not all the reviews on this dress were positive but I really liked it. I thought the dress was elegant and beautiful.

Target announced their latest ensemble with the well known collection last October and since then have been relatively mum on the collection. On January 3, the NYT released a vingnette with Jason Wu about the collection along with two photos. Wu says he did not attempt to copy pieces from his couture collections but he created completely new pieces based upon his fresh aesthetic and a mischevious black kitty cat named Milu. Personally, I love her jaunty red bow and she reminds me of a naughty black cat my Mom had named Tabitha. (all images courtesy of Target)

I LOVE the clean lines and ‘all american girl’ look of these dresses and the handbag. The sailor-suit inspired dress is ador-able and I for one hope to see it on our fabulous First Lady. By far, my favorite piece in the two photos that were released is the black and white contrast canvas bag. I absolutely adore this handbag. I have been looking for a black/white handbag (*that I can afford*) for probably a year. This one is classy, elegant and very Jackie-O in my opinion.

I have to assume that we will see the entire lookbook soon, because the collection will debut in stores in about a month (Feb. 5). I leave you with the formal advertisement featuring a cute pink, yellow, and black sleeveless dress. Horizontal stripes and pleats are VERY trendy right now and this dress has both. I think it will be a hit. Apparantly the black shoes in the ad are also part of the collection, too bad we can hardly see them in this image.

I am looking forward to seeing the other pieces from the collection! The NYT article teased us with hints of knit t-shirts and tennis skirts (!) in the collection. Yay for us.

My Loot from Versace for H&M!

Versace for H&M window Union Square San Francisco

Versace for H&M Shopping Bag

Hi Beautiful People!!

I waited in line for THREE hours on November 19 to get access to the Versace for H&M boutique in Union Square in SF. However, it was worth every minute for this girl who grew up in clothes from Kmart to have Versace pieces! Some people may think I am nuts, but I really LOVE my new Versace stuff.

I almost got EVERYTHING that I wanted. The only piece I was not able to procure was the cotton jersey sleeveless top because it was only left in sizes 2 and 4 when I finally got in. Ok, I guess I need to start from the beginning.

I set my alarm for 3:30am for the night before the debut, but when I woke up I thought to myself “only crazy people would get up in the middle of the night to buy expensive clothes.” So my husband and I went back to sleep. However, when I woke up at my normal time of 6:30am I was ready to get to SF and get in line. We loaded up the dogs (seriously) and headed in to the City.

I arrived at H&M on Powell Street at 7:30am and the line to get in the store was already around the block.

Line to enter H&M for the Versace Collection

So I jumped in line and chatted up the people around me. H&M staff started giving out wristbands at approximately 7:50am. I obtained a gold wristband that meant I could shop at 10:45 (ugh!) for 15 minutes. The store really had the whole event down to a T–customers with wristbands had to wait in line to get in for their allotted 15 minutes. I didn’t witness any drama throughout the whole morning–the staff was super nice and friendly. Most of the customers were cool and knew what to expect. The men’s clothes were gone almost instantly. I didn’t even see any of the men’s stuff.

The funniest thing was the people who arrived at like 11:00 thinking it would be calmed down and they could shop. Their faces were classic when the saw the line and the color coded wristband system!

Staff repeatedly announced shoppers were not allowed to purchase more than two of the same item. If they tried it would be taken from them and placed back in the inventory. The 2-only rule was the only thing that gave me hope that I might get to see the jewelery. I also knew everyone wanted the coats so I thought I might have some luck. But the jewelery was also the cheapest thing in the collection…this is what I was thinking when I was waiting.

So, I waited. and waited. and waited. and waited for another hour. When we were finally given the signal that it was time for the gold wristbands to line up I was so excited! Also, my back and feet were hurting!

The gold wristband group was finally admitted into the boutique. It was definitely worth the wait because there was a lot of merchandise still left. Well, there were no purses or necklaces left over when I got in but there were plenty of clothes. I grabbed my pink scarf first, then headed to the jewelery table. I was stoked to find a ring with the red flower, a set of earrings, and the goldtone bracelet I wanted! Sadly, all the leather bracelets were gone by the time I got to the jewelery table but I must have had some good karma because I did find one that had been returned by a store employee before I left! Yay!

The earring are giant and much too heavy for my earlobes–they will be returned or given away as a gift.

The leather and flower bracelet is soo fabulous, it really is a statement piece. I love that it looks like a corsage! very chic.

Black and Gold Leather Bracelet Versace for H&M (clasp)

My MOST favorite piece, however, is the gold tone bracelet because it is so versatile and can be worn with so much. I love the chains…this is a really cool bracelet. Much to my chagrin I realized the CLASP sucks! This gorgeous bracelet has fallen off of me twice and now I am afraid to wear it lest I lose it. :-(

Dammit Donatella! I love this bracelet, but the clasp leaves much to be desired.

Goldtone Versace for H&M Bracelet!

In terms of clothes, sadly, I got nothing that I can keep except for the pink scarf. Almost everything was sold out in my size by the time I got in there. I did not even see the coats or the full-sized handbags. The small bags were just too small to even be practical. In a moment of weakness, I purchased the black silk pleated skirt in a much too small size, but I returned it to the H&M store in Emeryville, Ca. I hope someone who really wants it buys it and loves it!

So that was my loot: two bracelets, a pink silk scarf, and a cocktail ring. Overall, it was a good experience! I’m not sure I will ever stand in line for THREE HOURS but it was fun once!
